THE MOTIVATION TOUR
(a three-hour presentation/workshop)
by Richard Bradley
Motivating students to WRITE
Motivating students to SPEAK
By the end of the presentation/workshop we will have:
-. examined current ideas and theories about MOTIVATION
-. examined how these ideas and theories can relate to second language teaching
-. examined/observed/carried out a variety of extremely effective activities which (I believe) strongly motivate students to WRITE and SPEAK in a second language
The presentation/workshop will be conducted entirely in English in a very clear and visual way, making it suitable for teachers with B1 (CEFR) level of English and above. All of the theory and most of the activities are relevant/suitable (with some adaptation) to/for both primary and secondary teaching. The aim is to reach ALL teachers, regardless of their own level of English or the level of English that they teach.
Richard Bradley BA (Hons) PGCE (TESOL) LTCL (Mus Ed) Hello. First of all I just want to reassure all of you doubters that despite being six foot six and a half inches (1m 99.5cm) tall, I am 100% human being. Rumours that I am a member of some super race from a distant planet, who has come to earth to try to make humanoid children THINK more, are totally unfounded.
After graduating from the University of Southampton in 1985 I worked as an English teacher in Portugal and Spain with children and adults. In 1988 I resumed my studies and in 1989 I left the Institute of Education, University of London, with a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I worked briefly in the state sector in the UK and then at Cultura Inglesa, Rio de Janeiro, as Specialist/Adviser in Teaching Methods.
In 2002, realising that a lot of the most interesting things I had been doing for many years were now gathered under the umbrella term CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and predicting (accurately) a huge growth in Bilingual Education, I shifted the focus of my work and research to this area, whilst maintaining and developing my philosophy that purposeful creativity should be at the core of all teaching. Since 2002 I have worked extensively with Trinity College London and Bilingual schools. I have given lectures, workshops and courses in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Bulgaria, Romania and China. In 2010 I started working with Creative Education in the UK giving development courses to state school teachers. I am committed to maximising learners’ potential by encouraging them to think and be creative in more than one language.
